Job Summary

Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Willamette Falls in Oregon City, OR is looking for a collaborative pianist to support weekly services. The ideal candidate will be a passionate musician eager to match music to service themes that include topics such as aging, friendship, community, interdependence, social justice, and love. We have a beautiful Boston grand piano, and a 100 year-old church building with great acoustics. Our congregation is dedicated to quality music in worship, and enjoys a variety of musical styles, particularly popular and folk, but also sacred, classical, and gospel.

Our pianist is responsible for choosing and playing preludes, postludes, and offertories each week that fit the theme of the service. They accompany and may lead hymns. They also accompany the choir, and sometimes other musicians from the congregation who are supplying special music. They may also collaborate with the minister to provide soulful moments during worship services or rituals.

This position does not require attendance at staff meetings. It does require timely email submission of music listings to the Office Administrator & Minister.

Duties

• Play for Wednesday night choir rehearsals (September-May)

• Provide musical accompaniment during most Sunday services, and a few special services, including Christmas Eve.

• Nurture a collaborative musical relationship in the congregation, encouraging others to share their talents on occasion.

• Work well with other staff members and volunteers to elevate music within our congregation.

Skills

• Ability to play from traditional sheet music, charts, and some improvisation

• Excellent communication skills to effectively convey ideas and foster collaboration among team members.

• A passion for worship through music that aligns with our Shared values

Weekly Schedule (Approx.)

• Sunday : 9:30-11:45

• Wednesday evening: 1.5 hours (weekly rehearsal)

• Pianist will have right of first refusal for opportunities to play for other events such as weddings and funerals at an agreed rate paid by the renters/hosts.

Services

• Sunday Worship - 10:30 am (all but one Sunday per month)

Requirements

• Prior experience as a choral accompanist or collaborative musician.

• Ability to work well with others on shared goals for the service, including music choices, and communicate in a timely manner.
