Transgender Inclusion in Congregations
A special opportunity for UU music leaders
Get ready to transform your heart and your approach to “welcome”! AUUMM and the Transforming Hearts Collective have teamed up to support UU music leaders in the work of transgender inclusion and culture shift.
Developed by Rev. Mykal Slack and Zr. Alex Kapitan, “Transgender Inclusion in Congregations” is a six-session online course designed for congregational teams that want to take their knowledge and skills to the next level in terms creating congregations that are fully inclusive and affirming of trans/non-binary people. In spring 2020, UU music leaders will have the chance to take this course at a discount and connect with peers for discussion and support. Get full course details.
By signing up, you will get:
Full access to the online course (lectures, resources, and discussion board)
Placement in a small group of fellow UU music leaders who will meet together virtually three times for discussion
Tailored reflection questions and supplemental resources specifically for music leaders
Access to several live sessions with Transforming Hearts Collective leaders open only to music leaders
A certificate upon completion of the course
How much does it cost?
The course costs $125 per person. If at least 20 UU music leaders sign up by December 1st, AUUMM will unlock a discount of 20% ($100 per person). Scholarships are available; please fill out the sign-up form and we will send additional info.
How will it work?
The sign-up period closes on December 1, 2019. The course will run from January through March, with small groups meeting once per month to discuss two sessions each time. Each session consists of a 45- to 55-minute lecture and supplemental resources. Participants will watch the lectures on their own and then meet up with their small group for discussion.
Who can take the course?
Anyone who is a member of AUUMM. People of all genders are welcome to participate; this course is for everyone, of any experience or relationship to trans communities. If you have any questions about whether this course is for you, please contact transformingheartscollective.com.
Why does it matter?
In January 2019, TRUUsT, the organization of UU trans religious professionals, released a report that showed that almost three-quarters of trans/non-binary UUs do not feel as though their congregation is completely inclusive of them as trans people, and almost half report regularly experiencing trans-related marginalization in UU spaces. In a time of increasing state-sponsored violence being directed at trans people, it’s vital for UU congregations to change these numbers.
